This year more voters will take to the polls globally than in any other year in the past. The results could have consequential implications for future global climate and energy policy. Voters head for national elections in 64 countries, representing roughly half of the world’s population. Outcomes in the United States, U.K., India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, and the European Union, could influence the direction of global climate talks in the years to come, while outcomes for opposition voices under the circumstances of elections in Iran, Russia, and Venezuela might also hold clues for future energy geopolitics.

Ed Crooks

Ed Crooks is Vice Chair, Americas at Wood Mackenzie. He joined Wood Mackenzie in 2019. Based in New York, he covers the full range of commodities, technologies and sectors, with a particular focus on climate policy, economics and the energy transition. He writes Wood Mackenzie’s popular Energy Pulse newsletter, analysing the latest developments in the world of energy, and also hosts The Energy Gang, one of the world's most popular energy-focused podcasts.

Before Wood Mackenzie, Ed was an award-winning energy editor for the Financial Times, first in London and then in New York. He joined the FT in 1999 as economics editor. He previously worked as an economics correspondent for BBC News, a reporter for Investor’s Chronicle magazine, and an economic researcher at the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He has also served on the UK government’s Sustainable Development Commission.  Ed has a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University.

Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran

Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran is Global Energy & Climate Innovation Editor at The Economist. He covers the energy and utility industries, the clean energy transition, climate innovations and low carbon technologies. He further leads coverage of America’s climate and green infrastructure efforts, and keeps a watchful eye on ESG trends and corporate pledges of net-zero emissions for signs of promise as well as greenwashing.

An award-winning senior journalist, he previously served as both US Business Editor and China Business Editor. He also serves as chairman of The Economist Innovation Summit, a provocative series of global conferences on innovation.

Vijay is a life member at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is an advisor on sustainability and innovation to the World Economic Forum at Davos, and his commentaries have appeared on NPR and the BBC, in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He has addressed groups ranging from the US National Governors’ Association and the UN General Assembly to the Technology, Entertainment & Design (TED), Aspen Ideas and AAAS conferences.

Carolyn Kissane

Carolyn Kissane serves as the Associate Dean of New York University’s Center for Global Affairs and Director of NYU’s SPS Energy, Climate Justice, and Sustainability Lab. Carolyn Kissane’s areas of thought leadership and entrepreneurship include the Energy Transition, Sustainability Innovation, and Policy, as well as Cybersecurity. Dr. Kissane is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the National Committee on US-China Relations. She serves on the boards of the New York Energy Forum, New York Energy Week, and Clean Start Advisory Board. She was awarded Breaking Energy’s Top Ten New York Women in Energy and Top Ten Energy Communicator. She hosts Fueling our Future, which brings energy and environment experts together for discussion and debate. Dr. Kissane received her Ph.D. from Columbia University.
