COP28 is fast approaching, and with it the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement. The GST is a landmark moment for the UNFCCC process, assessing for the first time whether or not the Paris Agreement is on track to meet its goals. GST will be a major issue in Dubai, however, it is far from the only issue at hand, at what promises to be a pivotal gathering.  How should the energy industry and financial sectors be thinking about COP28? Is 1.5°C still a realistic goal? What is the role of finance in funding adaptation and mitigation – and facilitating emission reductions?

COP 28 will be the platform both for addressing the greater complexity of the energy transition, including the North-South divide, and at the same time identifying the technologies, policies, opportunities and commitments for meeting the urgent needs of the energy transition. In this webinar, we will discuss the expectations and outcomes at COP28 from the perspectives of the Global South.

Chinedu Igwe

Chinedu lgwe is the Acting Head, Sustainability at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) where he is currently driving the development of NNPC Sustainability framework which covers NNPC's environmental responsiveness. With over 18 years' experience, Chinedu has contributed immensely to the oil and gas industry through development of strategies, commercial agreements, policies, regulations and laws that attracted and unlocked multi billion dollar investments in the oil and gas sector. He facilitated the implementation of gas monetisation strategies that deepened the development of Nigeria's gas midstream and downstream value chain which contributed immensely to increasing gas utilisation in the domestic market and improving Nigeria's energy security.

As an advocate for a just energy transition, adaptation and global collaboration in addressing the global climate challenges, he leverages his multi-stakeholder skills in driving collaboration among the oil and gas peers towards achieving global net-zero targets and organizes sustainability workshops to drive home the sustainability mandate. He holds a degree from the Federal University of Technology Owerri in electronics and a Certificate in Sustainability Leadership and Corporate Responsibility from the London Business School.

Anna Mosby

Anna Mosby is senior research analyst at S&P Global Commodity Insights. She specializes in climate change mitigation policies and regulations in the energy sector. Anna focuses on the implications of climate-related policies and regulations for companies operating in the energy industry. Anna's areas of expertise include US domestic and international climate change policy; greenhouse gas emission projections; and the physical impacts of climate change on energy infrastructure. She leads the Energy and Climate Scenarios team's policy indexation program and associated country profiles.

Prior to joining S&P Global, Anna worked at Energetics, Inc., supporting the US Department of Energy's Office of International Affairs on Mission Innovation and the US-China Clean Energy Research Center and the Office of Energy Policy and Systems Analysis. Therein, she worked on international clean energy programs and energy sector vulnerabilities to climate change and extreme weather. Anna holds a Bachelor of Science in biology from Duke University and a Master of Science in biological oceanography from the College of William and Mary, United States.

David Victor

Dr. David Victor is a professor and Peter Cowhey Center on Global Transformation Chair in Innovation and Public Policy at the School of Global Policy and Strategy at UC San Diego. Victor is the co-director of the campus-wide Deep Decarbonization Initiative, which focuses on real world strategies for bringing the world to nearly zero emissions of warming gases. He is also an adjunct professor in Climate, Atmospheric Science & Physical Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Prior to joining the faculty at UC San Diego, he was a professor at Stanford Law School where he taught energy and environmental law.

Victor was a convening lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a United Nations-sanctioned international body with 195 country members that won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He has been tapped by Southern California Edison to lead the company’s Community Engagement Panel for decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. Victor is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Energy, where his work focuses on the role of natural gas as a transition fuel to deep decarbonization as well as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2020, Victor was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the oldest and most esteemed honorary societies in the nation. He is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Atul Arya

Atul Arya is Senior Vice President and Chief Energy Strategist at S&P Global and is responsible for integrating energy content, analysis and insights across the entire energy value chain and for C-suite client engagements. Dr. Arya’s areas of expertise include energy strategy, climate change, energy transition, renewables, CCS, Hydrogen, clean energy technologies, upstream oil and gas and energy markets. He has previously led Energy Insight, Research and Analysis, and Energy Research teams at IHS and IHS Markit. Dr. Arya has over 35 years of leadership experience in the energy industry, including senior positions with bp. His international career spans a diverse array of energy fields from strategy development and business planning to field operations and technology innovation. Dr. Arya has previously served on boards of several companies and institutions including Tata BP Solar, Green Mountain Energy and National Council for Atmospheric Research. He was a member of the World Economic Forum’s Agenda Council on the Future of Oil and Gas and Adjunct Senior Fellow at Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Arya holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in petroleum engineering.
