Mr. Reed will discuss heat pumps generally in the context of decarbonizing building heat. He will discuss research showing why TDHPs may offer a much more effective, immediate, and economically practical pathway to decarbonizing building heat loads in cool/cold climates. This contrasts with proposals to completely electrify building heat with a strategy centered on electric heat pumps. Both pathways to decarbonization are quantitatively analyzed and compared with an eye towards saving energy, building owner cost, and GHG emissions. The results may surprise you. Ultimately, it seems that the electricity and gas grids may actually need to work closely together in the long-run if decarbonization is the goal.

SMTI is a technology developer focused on Thermally-Driven Heat Pumps (TDHP) aimed at changing the way building heat is produced for residential and medium to small commercial buildings. In contrast to electric heat pumps, TDHPs are much more robust and comfortable for cold weather heating. They also save 30-50% of the energy normally needed to heat buildings, and they offer 2 to 5-year paybacks to the building or homeowner, depending on the application. The underlying thermodynamic cycle has a 150-year track-record and has been widely used in various applications.
