Record levels of oil and natural gas production in the U.S. have led to a new paradigm of an energy-dominant America. Please join the Energy Forum in this session to explore how growing U.S. exports would impact global trade and political dynamics.

In particular, we will focus on the surge in the U.S. natural gas production. Our speakers Gordon Shearer, Senior Advisor at Poten & Partners and former CEO at Hess LNG, will focus on LNG and the U.S. role in the global LNG market, and, Robert Johnston, CEO of the Eurasia Group, will discuss the geopolitical implications.

SPEAKERS 

Gordon Shearer has been active in the LNG industry for more than 25 years. He is a senior adviser with Poten & Partners, which he rejoined in 2015. From 2007 until 2013 he was CEO of Hess LNG (a joint venture of Hess Corporation and Poten & Partners). Before joining Poten in 2001, he was employed by Cabot Corporation, where he was CEO of Cabot LNG Corporation, which owned and operated the LNG terminal in Boston Harbor and the LNG carrier Matthew. During this time, he was heavily involved in the creation of the Atlantic LNG project in Trinidad and Tobago. He received a BSc in geophysics from Edinburgh University in 1976 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1978. He was a member of the National Petroleum Council from 2005 until 2016.

Robert ("RJ") Johnston is chief executive officer of the Eurasia Group since 2013, after seven years as founder and head of the firm's Global Energy and Natural Resources Strategy Group. He is an active public speaker on issues in the energy and natural resources sector, for events ranging from GE Ecoimagination “Future of Energy” to the Blackstone Energy Roundtable.

Robert previous roles include managing director of equity research at Medley Global Advisors, research director at UBS Warburg Energy, and director of internal research team supporting oil, LNG, metals, and FX trading at Enron Global Markets. He also directed political risk research at ArmorGroup for corporate clients in a variety of markets including China, Russia, Colombia, and Indonesia.

Robert is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center and a Global Fellow at the Canada Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center. Robert initiated Eurasia Group’s Days of Service community relations program in 2015 and he is on the board of Junior Achievement of Greater Washington.

MODERATOR

Carolyn Kissane serves as the Academic Director of the graduate program in Global Affairs at the Center for Global Affairs. She is a Clinical Associate Professor where she teaches graduate level courses examining the geopolitics of energy, comparative energy politics, energy, environment and resource security, a regional course focusing on Central Asia.

Dr. Kissane is Coordinator of the Energy and Environment concentration at the Center and is faculty adviser to the Energy Policy International Club. She was awarded the esteemed NYU Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007, the SCPS Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009, and nominated for the NYU-wide Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008, 2009 and 2016.

She was named Breaking Energy's Top Ten New York Women in Energy and Top Ten Energy Communicator. She hosts Fueling our Future, an energy series she moderates which brings in energy and environment experts for conversation and debate. She also serves on the boards of the New York Energy Week, and the Clean Start Advisory Board. Dr. Kissane received her Ph.D. from Columbia University.
