Please join the Energy Forum for a discussion with Daniel Sternoff, Senior Managing Director with Medley Global Advisors, and Bernard Haykel, Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. They will cover geopolitical developments in Russia and Saudi Arabia, drivers for energy cooperation between the two countries and market implications. Carolyn Kissane, Academic Director at NYU's Center for Global Affairs, will moderate the discussion.

Daniel Sternoff

Daniel Sternoff is a Senior Managing Director with Medley Global Advisors and heads the firm's Energy and Emerging Markets Practices. At MGA since 2002, Daniel focuses on oil markets, geopolitics, China, the Middle East and US policy/politics, working with investors across asset classes to integrate MGA's policy intelligence into actionable ideas. Daniel joined MGA from Reuters, where he held postings as a Senior Middle East Correspondent based in Jerusalem and head of the Foreign Exchange and Treasury desks in New York. Daniel has an MA in International Economics and International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and graduated magna cum laude from Duke University.

Bernard Haykel

Bernard Haykel is professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University where he is also director of the Institute for the Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. Haykel is the author of “Revival and Reform in Islam,” and most recently the co-editor of “Saudi Arabia in Transition,” both published by Cambridge University Press.  He is also the author of numerous articles on the politics of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Salafism, al-Qaeda and ISIS. Prof. Haykel has supervised over 10 PhD dissertations that deal with Arabian politics and history.  He has received several awards, such as the Prize Fellowship at Magdalen College, Oxford, the Carnegie Corporation and Guggenheim fellowships and the Old Dominion Professorship at Princeton. Haykel has advised the U.S., British and Saudi Arabian governments and appears frequently in print and broadcast media, including PBS, NPR, the New York Times, al-Jazeera and the BBC among others. He earned his D.Phil. in Oriental Studies from the University of Oxford.

Carolyn Kissane

Carolyn Kissane serves as the Academic Director of the graduate program in Global Affairs at the Center for Global Affairs and is a Clinical Associate Professor where she teaches graduate level courses examining the geopolitics of energy, comparative energy politics, energy, environment and resource security, a regional course focusing on Central Asia.

She is Coordinator of the Energy and Environment concentration at the Center and is faculty adviser to the Energy Policy International Club. Dr. Kissane was awarded the esteemed NYU Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007, the SCPS Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009, and nominated for the NYU-wide Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008, 2009 and 2016.

She was named Breaking Energy's Top Ten New York Women in Energy and Top Ten Energy Communicator. She hosts Fueling our Future, an energy series she moderates which brings in energy and environment experts for conversation and debate. She serves on the boards of the New York Energy Forum, New York Energy Week, and the Clean Start Advisory Board. Dr. Kissane received her Ph.D. from Columbia University.
