Solar Decathlon - Who Won the 2017 Challenge and the Larger Competition Picture

November 16, 2017, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM MT
Indian Tree Golf Course
7555 Wadsworth Blvd
Arvada, CO

The DOE Solar Decathlon challenged 11 university teams to design, build, and present net-zero solar powered houses to tens of thousands of visitors at Peña Station in Denver this October. The competition manager, Joe Simon, will share the results of the 2017 Solar Decathlon, held in Denver, including pictures and a breakdown of the winning houses from this year competition. He will also discuss the overall impact on students, industry, visitors, and the universities themselves from this competition over the years. He will focus on the role that energy production, time-of-use energy, and energy efficiency played determining the overall winner of the competition. He will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the electrical distribution solution, including enabling two european teams to operate on 50hz power throughout the event while interconnected with Xcel energy. In addition, insights are available into residential battery systems, as 10 of 11 teams had local storage integrated into their designs. Opportunities to understand the approach, ask questions, and learn will be provided.

Joe Simon is the Competition Manager for the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. A former Decathlon student alumni (Illinois 07 & 09), Joe has been the event competition manager since 2011. In addition to the Solar Decathlon, he supports the DOE Race to Zero competition, manages projects leveraging laboratory expertise for dozens of solar startups, and works to build energy efficient modular housing. Joe is a licensed Architect and holds a Masters of Architecture and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Illinois.
